I was reading an article about heart health and it mentioned a nutrient called Co-Enzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Can you tell me what this nutrient is and why we need it?

CoQ10 (Co-Enzyme Q10) is a powerful enzyme needed by the body to produce ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), the fuel for all processes in the body that require energy. An easy way to remember how CoQ10 influences our health is to compare it to the role of a spark plug in a car engine. Just as the engine depends on the initial spark from the spark plug to release energy from petrol, cells in the human body cannot function without the energy-releasing effects of CoQ10.

CoQ10 (also known as Ubiquinone), is found in all cells in the body, however greasest concentrations are located in the heart, liver, intestinal tract, gums, kidneys and immune system. CoQ10 is also a powerful antioxidant and supports healthy heart function. Research indicates low levels of CoQ10 may be associated with some form of heart disease. In addition, some medicines, especially those that lower cholesterol, may also deplete the body's levels of CoQ10 which is why supplementation is recommended. CoQ10 is often taken by athletes to support recovery after exercise, and is used to assist general wellbeing and healthy energy levels in the elderly.
